The Making of a Pet Photography Business
Pets Photography Studio was founded by Richie Schwartz, often referred to as “America’s Most Experienced Pet Photographer.”
Richie Schwartz is one of the most accomplished and widely recognized pet photographers in the United States. With over 40 years of experience behind the camera and a background as a Veterinary Technician, Dog Groomer, and Trainer, Richie brings a unique understanding of animals that translates into striking, heartfelt portraits with a fun twist.
After a successful 20 year career in photojournalism, weddings, events, family and children’s photography, and commercial work, Richie decided to specialize in pet photography. In 2002, he co-founded Great Beginnings Photo and its subsidiary Pet One Photo, which became the largest pet photography company in the world. As Operations Manager, Richie led a team of 40 photographers operating in 600 PetSmart and Petco stores across 30 states, producing over 50,000 pet photo sessions annually.
In 2006, Richie launched his solely owned Pets Photography Studio in New York, using a similar business model on a smaller, more localized scale. He successfully pitched his concept to PETCO, securing a contract that placed his studio in over 80 locations across New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
By 2010, Richie had taken on the same role with national chain Pet Supplies “Plus,” servicing stores in NY, NJ, CT, and PA. In 2013, he partnered with Petland Discounts, a regional pet supply chain with over 100 stores. Since the pandemic, Richie has redirected his focus to partnering with smaller independent pet businesses, including grooming salons, pet boutiques, doggie daycares, boarding kennels, pet stores, and veterinary clinics.
On a personal level, Richie has been recognized both for his photography and his contributions to the community. He provides free photography for several Pet Rescue organizations and town shelters. Richie was named to NBC Universal’s Petside.com’s list of Top 25 Pet People of 2010 along with Oprah Winfrey, Betty White and Ellen DeGeneres, for his charity work with animals and this impact on the welfare of pets.
